On January 4, Zenshin Daiko entertained the crowd at the Collegiate Night competition of the Maui Gymnastics Invitational 2002 at the War Memorial Gym. Over 400 gymnasts from around the state and across the mainland competed in the three day event.

Introduction to Taiko Workshop

Zenshin Daiko will conduct a two-part Introduction to Taiko workshop on April 14 and 21. This workshop is for students ages seven to nine. The workshop is already full with over 15 children who were on a waiting list - some for almost two years. Unfortunately the number of participants must be limited to take into consideration the available resources.

The workshop will cover topics such as; history of taiko in Japan and the U.S., different types of drums, parts of drums and how they are built, basic drills and background information about Zenshin Daiko and it’s philosophies.

The cost of the workshop is $20.00 and includes a pair of practice bachi (drum sticks) and a Zenshin Daiko t-shirt. Students that complete the workshop will be invited to join Zenshin Daiko and be in the beginning class.

ZD Elects Board & Officers

Zenshin Daiko held it’s annual special meeting on December 9. The main purpose of the meeting was to have the general membership elect Board members. Elected to three year terms were Lisa Apana, Gary Wasano and Thomas Welch. Bill Uemura was also elected to finish a vacant one year term. Kamie-Lei Pacheco will serve as the student Board member.

There was also discussion on Zenshin Daiko’s 3rd Annual Taiko Festival, the new practice studio and the $10,000 grant from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc.

A Board of Directors meeting immediately followed the General Membership meeting. The Board re-elected it’s current officers to serve another one year term; President Bill Uemura, Vice President Ralph Ajifu, Treasurer Yvonne Jo and Secretary Mary Machida.

The new Board members were then updated on what Zenshin Daiko has been doing and future plans.
