Members of Zenshin Daiko and Kona Daifukuji Taiko pose on the steps of the Kona Daifukuji Mission after a good lunch, a football game and a taiko jam session. Over 30 members and parents from ZD made the trip to Kona for a weekend of fun.
Zenshin Daiko traveled to Kona to participate in the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival over the Veteran’s Day weekend. The trip started on Friday, November 8 as the 34 members and parents of Zenshin Daiko made their way to Kona by flying to Honolulu first. This was necessary because ZD had to be in Kona early Saturday morning to march in the Grand Parade with Kona Daifukuji Taiko. After the parade, everyone enjoyed lunch from the Kona Daifukuji Fujinkai booth and then prepared to perform on stage at Hale Halawai Park at 1:00 pm.
Kona Daifukuji Taiko started off the performance with two numbers. ZD played a 20 minute set and Kona finished off the show with a energetic piece called Dancing Dragons. After the performance the members from both groups had a chance to meet and talk story. The real fun came on Sunday when ZD had lunch, a football game and a taiko jam session at Kona Daifukuji Mission.
The idea of going to Kona came about after Kona Daifukuji Taiko was invited to perform in Zenshin Daiko’s 4th Annual Taiko Festival on June 28, 2003. Reverend Tamiya thought it would be great if the two groups could get together before the concert. The 32nd Annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival provided an excellent opportunity for ZD to go to Kona.
Thank you to the organizers of the Festival, Reverend Tamiya and his taiko members and their parents for their great hospitality and the opportunity to play in Kona. See you on Maui in June.
