Eiichi Saito & Masami Miyazaki of KODO Gives ZD Taiko Workshop.

Zenshin Daiko was fortunate to have Eiichi Saito and Masami Miyazaki come to Maui to teach a taiko workshop to ZD members. They actually arrived on Maui on March 10 after spending a month traveling all over North America giving taiko workshops. Coming a few days early allowed a little time to relax and do some tourist stuff on Maui like whale watching aboard the Prince Kuhio, visiting the top of Haleakala, checking out the Maui Ocean Center and, of course, eating at some great Maui restaurants. After the sightseeing was done Eiichi and Masami were ready to work. On Thursday, March 13th, ZD members were mesmerized by the energy and humor that Eiichi used to deliver his message. Keeping everyone on their toes by constantly introducing new things and building on it. Although both Eiichi and Masami have pretty good English, ZD parent Shiho You interpreted the finer points of the workshop. The message that came across loud and clear was that style and form are very important in taiko but the playing together and having fun are more important. After the workshop, Eiichi and Masami posed for pictures with ZD members and signed bachi (drum sticks). Zenshin Daiko is looking forward to the next time they come to Maui to share their love of taiko. Special thanks to Daniel Rosen of KASA for organizing the workshop tour.

On March 15, several ZD members traveled to Oahu to watch the 5th Annual Hawaii International Taiko Festival featuring the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble and Tao from Japan. Both KETE and Tao put on wonderful, energetic performances that the audience really enjoyed. The next day some members attended the workshops taught by Tao, KETE and Eiichi Saito.
