Stanford Taiko arrived on Maui on Saturday, March 22 to learn how to make wine barrel taiko from Zenshin Daiko. By the time they left 8 days later they tried their hand at all aspects of drum making, jam with ZD members, experience one of ZD’s legendary potlucks and take home 4 wine barrel chudaiko. The 15 members of Stanford taiko and their advisors Steve Sano, Linda Uyechi and Kimi worked really hard to learn how Zenshin Daiko makes their drums. The first couple of days were spent mostly watching and taking notes, video and photos while ZD builders walked them through the steps. By the third day, ST members broke up into groups and went at it themselves and quickly became proficient with the belt sander, orbital sander, jig saw and plunge router. Stanford also got to practice the skinning process by putting the skins on the four chudaiko that they took home. Too bad there wasn’t enough time to have them prepare a fresh cow hide.
