Dance Workshop with Shohei Kikuchi

Michelle Fujii (front left) accompanied Shohei Kikuchi (front right) to Maui to give Zenshin Daiko a Japanese Folk Dance workshop. Zenshin Daiko members follow their lead in learning Soran Bushi.
(above right) Soran Bushi is a dance about hard working fisherman so everyone rows their boat while imagining the ocean in front of them.

On July 6, Zenshin Daiko memebers had the opportunity to learn a Japanese Folk Dance from Shohei Kikuchi. Kikuchi Sensei recently retired from Warabi-za, a famous Japanese Folk Art company and formed his dance shool, Man You Shu. He was with Warabi-za for 35 years as a performer then a choreographer.

Michelle Fujii, formerly of San Jose Taiko and currently a member of the On Ensemble, studied with Kikuchi Sensei for two years. She coordinated the workshop tour and accompanied him to Maui.

Although many Japanese Folk songs use taiko, the main focus of the workshop was the dance. ZD members used their imagination to help visualize the story of the folk dance Soran Bushi. This song incorporates movements that tell the story of the hard working fisherman.

Congratulations Nicole Koga

ZD performed at Nicole’s graduation party. Nicole is shown here soloing for the last time. Heather and Raeceen cheer her on.

Nicole Koga is Zenshin Daiko’s first ever High School Graduate. Nicole has played with Zenshin Daiko for four years and was always a source of fun and positive energy. She always tried to make time for taiko despite her very busy schedule.

Nicole was always the “old lady” of Zenshin Daiko. Every time her birthday rolled around the upper age range of Zenshin Daiko’s membership changed. Everyone at Zenshin Daiko loved her sense of humor, her laugh, her smile and her organizational skills.

We will miss you Nicole. Come to visit and good luck in your future endeavors.
